Webelos enjoyed the first aid sessions with “Rippy” the gator and everybody enjoyed the song and first aid lessons. Many scouts learned and applied the EDGE method (Explain, Demonstrate, Guide, Enable). Troop scouts were mentored to acknowledge the need to be more engaged to communicate effectively with younger scouts. We Stayed well fed and dry despite a massive amount of rain. Flag ceremony was excellent with a flutist playing “Yankee Doodle Dandee” and bugle player playing “To the Colors” during raising the colors.

Troop provided support for feeding webelos, helping archery, and helping at BB gun ranges. Most importantly, Scouts going into the campout knew it would not be the best weather from Tropical Storm Ian and thrived. Scouts cheered and made a very positive impact on the webelos.

Bugler
Leadership Positions

Bugler

The bugler plays the bugle (or similar instrument) to mark key moments during the troop meeting, such as assembly, or on troop outings, such as reveille, mess call, and lights out. The bugler must know the required bugle calls and ideally should have earned the Bugling merit badge or be working toward earning it.

Responsibilities

  • Makes appropriate bugle calls, as requested, at troop meetings and activities
  • Maintain a high participation rate of at least 50% of meetings and campouts.
  • Set two personal goals – develop and implement two SMART goals for being the Bugler.
  • Submit a written report of your experience to your position coordinator and bring a copy to your next scoutmaster conference.
  • Completes Introduction to Leadership Skill Training (ILST)
  • Wear my uniform correctly, set a good example, practice the Scout Oath and Law – a standard responsibility of all the troop leadership positions.

This position meets with your Position Coordinator at least every 2 months to report on his progress towards his goals. This ensures he is fulfilling his duties and will receive rank advancement credit. Use the position coordinator as  an adult mentor that you can go to with ideas and for advice.

Scribe
Leadership Positions

Scribe

Job Description

The scribe is the troop’s secretary. Though not a voting member, they attend meetings of the patrol leaders’ council and keep a record of the discussions. They cooperate with the patrol scribes to record attendance and dues payments at troop meetings and to maintain troop advancement records. The troop scribe may be assisted by a member of the troop committee.

Responsibilities

  • Attends and keeps a log of patrol leaders’ council meetings
  • Maintain a high participation rate of at least 50% of meetings and campouts.
  • Records individual Scout attendance and dues payments
  • Records individual Scout advancement progress
  • Works with the troop committee member responsible for records and finance
  • Sends a newsletter to the troop on a monthly basis.
  • Set two personal goals – develop and implement two SMART goals.
  • Submit a written report of your experience to your position coordinator and bring a copy to your next scoutmaster conference.

Chaplain's Aide

Chaplain’s Aide

Job Description

The Chaplain Aide works with the Troop Chaplain to meet the religious and mental health needs of the Scouts in the troop. He also works to promote the religious emblems program.

Responsibilities

• Assists in the mental care of the troop, especially with younger scouts that may have a hard time on camp outs.

• Maintain a high participation rate of at least 50% of meetings and campouts.

• Keep troop leader appraised of religious holidays when planning .

• Assist Chaplain or religious coordinator in meeting the religious needs of troop members while on activities.

• Encourage saying grace at meals while camping or on activities.

• Tell Scouts about the religious emblem program of their faith.

• Set two personal goals – Implement and document with two SMART goals that will improve the morale of the troop.

• Submit a written report of your experience to your position coordinator and bring a copy to your next scoutmaster conference.

• Completes Introduction to Leadership Skill Training (ILST)

• Wear my uniform correctly, set a good example, practice the Scout Oath and Law – a standard responsibility of all the troop leadership positions.

Historian
Leadership Positions

Historian

Job Description

To ensure the Historian job is a real leadership position, our troop has included the following responsibilities in the list of duties.

Responsibilities

• Document and archive activities of the troop

• Maintain a high participation rate of at least 50% of meetings and campouts.

• Maintain and add to the troop history record on the web site and monthly newsletter.

• Make sure that plans that are made by PLC are archived from personal drives such as google documents and stored centrally to keep the history of the troop.

• Regularly attends campouts to photograph and record events of the day.

• Write about troop awards, recognitions, advancement, service, and special events in the troop record. This is being done on the web site now but is also printed and stored offline.

• Update troop information, such as new eagle scouts and troop leaders – we have a web page that lists eagle scouts and their projects and a page listing all positions and who held them.

• Publish photographs from troop activities on the web site – a photo gallery package lets the scout organize photos by event. Now that we have a new digital camera, we’re also posting some video clips.

• Submit at least two articles about troop events to local newspapers – in a town of 200,000 the paper is still willing to publish lots of ‘feel good’ articles and photos. When we first added this, they were very surprised at how often the short articles were accepted. It’s great publicity and more clippings to put in the old scrapbook.

• Keep historic items safe such as ribbons, awards, and memorabilia – all this gets stored in scrapbooks and a big box.

• Give a presentation to the troop in the last month of your term about the history of the troop – this gets the Historian in front of the troop and gives him a reason to go through the old stuff and learn something about the troop. It also gives the newer scouts a connection to the past.

• Set two personal goals – the Historian is also asked to develop and fulfill two SMART goals of his own. This might be starting a new scrapbook, archiving old ribbons off the troop flag, or anything else he feels would benefit the troop.

• Submit a written report of your experience to your position coordinator and bring a copy to your next scoutmaster conference.

• Completes Introduction to Leadership Skill Training (ILST)

• Wear my uniform correctly, set a good example, practice the Scout Oath and Law – a standard responsibility of all the troop leadership positions.

• Fulfill the requirements of this position for 6 months – the troop’s chosen term of office

Quartermaster

Job Description

Quartermasters serve as the troop’s supply boss. They keep an inventory of troop equipment and see that the gear is in good condition. They work with patrol quartermasters as they check out equipment and return it. At meetings of the patrol leaders’ council they report on the status of equipment in need of replacement or repair. In carrying out their responsibilities, they may have the guidance of a member of the troop committee.

Responsibilities

  • Keeps records on patrol and troop equipment
  • Makes sure equipment is in good working condition
  • Issues equipment and makes sure it is returned in good condition
  • Makes suggestions for new or replacement items
  • Maintain a high participation rate of at least 50% of meetings and campouts.
  • Set two personal goals – develop and implement two SMART goals that will improve the equipment or the troop’s use of it.
  • Works with the troop quartermaster responsible for equipment
  • Submit a written report of your experience to your position coordinator and bring a copy to your next scoutmaster conference.
  • Completes Introduction to Leadership Skill Training (ILST)
  • Wear my uniform correctly, set a good example, practice the Scout Oath and Law – a standard responsibility of all the troop leadership positions.

Patrol Leader

The patrol leader is the patrol’s key leader, representing the patrol at all patrol leaders’ council meetings and the annual program planning conference, and keeping patrol members informed of decisions made. Patrol leaders carry out planning, leading, and evaluating patrol meetings and activities, and assure patrols are prepared to participate in all troop activities. They keep their patrol intact so they can work together and share responsibilities to get things done. It is incumbent upon them to be a good example for the members of their patrol and the rest of the troop.

Responsibilities

  • Plans and leads patrol meetings and activities
  • Maintain a high participation rate of at least 50% of meetings and campouts.
  • Keeps patrol members informed
  • Assigns each patrol member a specific duty
  • Represents his patrol at all patrol leaders’ council meetings and the annual program planning conference
  • Prepares the patrol to participate in all troop activities
  • Works with other troop leaders to make the troop run well
  • Knows the abilities of each patrol member

Senior Patrol Leader

Job Description

With three green bars behind the Scout emblem, the senior patrol leader’s shoulder patch symbolizes one of the oldest leadership positions in Scouting. The Boy Scouts of America has long recognized the senior patrol leader as the highest youth leadership position in a troop. They are the primary link between a troop’s Scouts and its adult leaders. They shoulder the responsibility for leading meetings of the troop and the patrol leaders’ council and provide valuable leadership in planning and carrying out the troop’s program of outdoor activities, service projects, and events.
