2023 New York City Trip

by Webmaster
New York City

As Frank Sinatra put it, “If I can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere. It’s up to you, New York, New York”.

On August 4th to August 6th, we will have a special New York City backpacking trip using all public transportation. We will depart early on August 4th and make our way up to Camp Pouch on Staten Island. On August 5th, we will tour the city with a ferry ride in front of the Statue of Liberty, Rockefeller Center, Times Square, and more. It’s an opportunity for scouts to experience traveling and planning a city trip.

Transportation Logistics

We will depart from the Loudoun Station metro station and travel to Union Station. At Union Station we will take a 10:20 AM bus to 34th Street b/t 11th Ave and 12th Ave. We will travel by subway to the Staten Island Ferry. We will take the Ferry to Staten Island and take a bus to a .8 mile walk to the campsite at Camp Pouch.

On Saturday morning, we will wake up, and grab breakfast at a local bakery and get on a bus back to the Staten Island Ferry. We will travel past the Statue of Liberty again and have an exciting day in New York City. After a long day in the city, we will travel back to Camp Pouch and relax.

On Sunday morning, we will break down camp and make our way back to a Penn Station 11 AM Mega Bus back to Union Station with an expected arrival at 3:35 PM. We will travel back to Loudoun Station via Metro for pick-up.

Costs and Signing up

The cost for the bus trip to and from is $61.38 plus stripe fee. To sign-up, we are booking bus tickets as a group. Costs that are not included in signing up include souvenirs, food, metro, and subway tickets. We expect that scouts will bring their own lunch on Friday and estimate that each meal will be $15 for a total of $90. Metro ticket each way for $5, and we will have a better guess on the subway tickets once we have a definitive itinerary.

Who can sign-up?

To sign-up for this trip, we will be carrying all of our gear in a backpack. If you have never gone backpacking before, I would wait until the October backpacking trip. This trip will take a fair amount of physical and mental stamina and only those scouts that can handle a trip of this manner should sign-up. Sign-up for this trip is also very limited. We will have a maximum of 26 members including up to 6 adults so that we have at least a 1:5 ratio of scouts to adults to ensure we stick together.

We hope you can join us on this journey and have your scout find a new sense of wonder by traveling.
